What does a coach do?

What is standing in between you and your goals? Do you need capital? New skills? A Plan? What will it take to bring out your best? These questions are how we approach coaching.

As coaches, our job is to listen, offer feedback, and encourage our clients to pursue goals that will allow them to grow personally and professionally. Many of our clients are domain experts. Our job is not to tell them how to run their businesses; that’s what consultants do. Coaches provide a framework from which they can operate to vet new ideas, overcome challenges, and lead with confidence.

Agile introduces us to the concept of the Servant Leader. As coaches, our role is the ultimate servant leader. We are focused on providing all the tools and resources necessary for our clients to be a success. We eliminate obstacles. We resolve conflicts. We encourage best practices. And we allow clients to develop the metrics necessary to measure their progress and success.

It is not our role to tell you what to do. Our role is to help you develop a structured framework to pursue your goals. Naturally, our experience and expertise color our approach. We have worked with high net worth clients, as well as helped economically challenged entrepreneurs succeed. We have learned from both experiences and share insights from either perspective to benefit our clients.

Accountability & Goal Setting – We approach goals using SMART – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. It is not enough to want to grow a successful business. We must define what that looks like. What KPIs would we use to determine if we are on a path to success? What skills or resources do we need to acquire towards achieving our goals? Once a clear picture emerges, then we reverse engineer how to get there. Developing a plan to execute.

There are parts of building a startup we love, and some parts, well, not so much. But we must bring all the pieces together to make it work. Once a plan, schedule, and budget are in place, we assist our clients in conducting variance analysis (plan versus Actual) to understand how they are progressing and offer course corrections when an approach is not working.

There are Agile methodologies that can help us manage uncertainty. They are information radiators, software, and other tools to assist with workflow. There are established metrics that offer crucial insights into performance and profitability.

Finance 101 – I am a numbers guy. A bottom-line kind of coach. If it is not making money, it is not a sustainable business if it is not on a path to profitability. It is important to know your numbers. How much does it cost you to acquire a customer? What is the average ticket size? What is their lifetime value? How big is the opportunity? How much capital will you need? The Devil is in the details, and for business, the devil is how the numbers work.

We work with clients to build usable financial models to understand your business’ financials. What does it take to get to breakeven? What is the payback period? What is the monthly burn? What are sources of capital available to your business? Most businesses run out of cash before they reach success. We work with you to optimize your working capital to put you on a path to success.

Industry Expertise – Our collective backgrounds include Project Managers (Waterfall & Agile), Venture Capitalists, Founders, Angel Investors, and ecosystem builders. We have sat on both sides of a startup. We have struggled with the same challenges. We lost a few battles along the way and have turned those experiences into lessons learned.

Personal development may include soft skills such as time management, communication, or leadership. Beyond your domain skills, these soft skills facilitate career advancement.

Professional development includes developing or maintaining professional skills and credentials, including industry certifications through coursework, conferences, and online learning. Certifications from professional organizations like PMI assure the designee has acquired proficient skills to meet the qualifications to perform a job or task. What does a coach do?

Results+

Working with us is like every other business relationship. We need to understand what is working, how we are helping you meet your objectives, and more. To do this, we created “Results+” – a tool we created at PM Workshops to help our workshop participants and consulting clients observe and gauge the benefits of attending our training sessions, as well as from our consultation services.

The purpose is two-fold:

  • To establish clear expectations and objectives with our clients from the start to provide the appropriate training.
  • To ensure that our clients gain the benefits they were looking for when they hired us.

We start this process by meeting with our clients and determining the objectives using the SMART principle. Once the goal(s) is established with the client, we prepare an agenda, course exercises, and case studies to use during our workshop with the participants. Also, we provide our existing templates and develop new ones, which our clients and their participants can use in their day-to-day assignments.

Finally, we follow up with the client on a pre-defined scheduled basis to gauge progress, make adjustments as needed, and answer any questions or doubts. This phase continues until the deadline date for the goal(s) defined.

Our goal in creating R+ is to allow us to guarantee to our clients that we are providing them measurable benefits and ensuring that they can meet their goals and objectives.

Besides providing training and coaching, we also offer a wide range of consulting services to our clients in project management and its subsidiaries and supporting activities.

Depending on the client’s needs, our consulting services can last a week, months, or much longer. We may also work full time or just a few hours a day or week to provide guidance and performance evaluation and control. Our goal is to help our clients prepare their products and deliverables based on sound project management practices.

Our project managers have the academic training, vast project management experience, and the appropriate certifications to perform their assignments efficiently and effectively. The salient certifications related to project management include PMP (Project Management Professional), PMI-ACP (Project Management Institute – Agile Certified Professional), and GDPR (General Data Protection Regulations) Training.
